Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not aware of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism left him without words and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he posted on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
