European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
