Jair Bolsonaro detained after being declared a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The police intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
