McDonald's has pulled a Christmas advertisement created with generative AI following facing considerable public disapproval.

The brief film was developed with the help of generative AI clips and was first uploaded publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Removal

Following its publication, audiences online denounced the employment of AI in the advert. Several called it "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This moment serves as an important lesson as we examine the appropriate use of generative technology," commented a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was developed for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed various things that often go badly during the holidays, under the tagline "the most terrible time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI Commercials

Commercials that include generative AI have emerged as a increasing trend among major corporations, especially for the holiday campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly launched consecutive AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because clips made using current AI video tools are more likely to distort the longer they run, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked concerns about job displacement in the creative industry, with some observers pointing out it could negatively impact work for production staff.

Response from the Creators

Following the video's removal, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

She stated, the creation required "seven weeks" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then crafted during the edit "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't just an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a film."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly criticized, the reception for some AI-generated campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-generated Christmas spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "positive feedback" from viewers.

However, several companies have also encountered backlash for employing AI in their campaigns. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics described as "cheap" and "disturbing".

The incident highlights the continuing conversation within the advertising and production sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
