The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.
"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
