WHO Sounds Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Fewer than 10% of patients that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy can access them, warns the WHO as it publishes its inaugural guidance on the drugs.

With more than one billion individuals worldwide currently living with obesity, it is urging broader and more equitable access to these injectable treatments.

According to forecasts, more than two billion could be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with holistic and lifelong care," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and logistical bottlenecks are major hurdles to widespread availability to the injections that can aid individuals in losing significant weight, explains the agency.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Despite the present best projected scenario, the manufacturing of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The guideline urges governments and firms to increase access, through strategies including voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Injections Function

GLP-1 drugs replicate a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and increase feelings of fullness so individuals eat less.

Patients usually see weight reduction in the initial weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Studies points to users may regain a significant portion within a year of discontinuing the treatment, as their typical food cravings come back.

Being carrying excess weight increases your risk for developing diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some cancers.

Obesity impacts individuals in all nations and was responsible for millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
